Default [DY] Installing SMF for newcomers - 02-19-2012, 11:07 AM

Live preview at http://www.simplemachines.org

Step 1.

  • Create a new account.
  • You can do this by going to www.x10hosting.com
  • Notice: You need a real email account for this.
  • Write in a password you remember. And do the following

  • After you have registered an account go activate it by email
  • When you login there should be a page similar to this
  • You now need to press "Hosting"
  • That will redirect you to another page where you press cPanel.

  • Now login to cPanel and press "File manager".
  • Do not press the legacy filemanager.
  • You would also want to goto www.simpleportal.org and download smf.

  • After this is done simply press the upload button in the file manager
  • You could change the name of the folder to example: forums
  • But then you would have to change the path which I'm showing you how to do under this text.
  • After uploading the smf zip file, press extract and then open the smf folder
  • Inside this folder there will be a file called install.php. Don't do anything to that yet.

  • In my case the path of my forums would be www.runegaming.x10.mx/smf/
  • You would want to type in your domain such as www.yourdomain.x10.mx/yourforumfoldername/install.php
  • When going to this page you will see it says SMF installer on the top.
  • Press next.
  • Here is where the possibly hard part comes.
  • Go back to your cPanel (Not the filemanager) and press MySQL database wizard.

  • Now create a new database.
  • Write down the database name.
  • Example of a database name: Youraccount_smf
  • Call it smf.
  • After making the database you will need to make an account for the database.
  • Just call it smfa or something like that

  • Don't forget to select the "ALL PRIVILIGES"
  • It will now say Youraccount_Smfa was added to the database Youraccount_Smf

  • Go back to the smf installer and write in your database name and username.
  • Then simply just press next.

  • Change the name of your forum to example: Myforum or something.
  • Here it also says "Forum URL", you would want to change it to whatever your forum folder is named.
  • Then press next.

  • For this step you need to create your forum admin account.
  • Do not lose this password!
  • Press next and then tick the box where it says delete install.php.
  • If this doesn't work then you need to do it manually.

Congratulations! You have now setup SMF!

How to install a mod

  • Press a mod then download it.
  • Make sure it's for your version of smf.
  • Locate to the mod and upload it.

It will now look something like this.
Press continue.
After that then press "Install mod"
