Default Advice about family. - 09-15-2012, 04:51 AM

Hello everyone, the server is experiencing some downtime right now, and I've had some things on my mind that I've wished to share for a while now about family.
Here's my situation: I am 17 moving out of my house in less than a year (straight after graduation) to Finland. My parents are moving to the States.
Now, most of the people browsing these forums are I believe between the ages of 14-16, and don't have to worry about this yet, but believe me: The time will pass much faster than you will ever believe, it seems only yesterday I was starting my penultimate year at school, without worrying about college applications or where I am going to live after I graduate, or even smaller things like where I will be going with my friends for senior trip.
My advice to you, the younger teenagers of the forums is to spend time with your family while you are still under the same roof with them. When I was 14-16 years old, I would stay in my room whenever I was in my house, not seeing my family, and only coming out of my room for food, school, and going out with my friends. This was also, partly due to my video game addiction (which I still am dealing with, I may write about it on another occasion), but basically, I was not spending time with my parents because I didn't really appreciate them for what they were. I took them for granted, and I know, from observing my friends and people who are younger than me that I am not the only one. Please, if you still live with your parents, show them that you love them (if they deserve it of course, I'm sure most of yours do). It doesn't have to be a big gesture. This morning for example I decided to spend some time with my dad by cooking our lunch together. Your parents will remember small gestures like that, and appreciate them.
For those of you already moved out, I hope you are all in contact with your parents and letting them know how you are. They care a lot for you, and I'm pretty sure they will appreciate to know what is going on in your lives.

TL;DR: Your parents love you. Don't take that for granted. Show your appreciation.

If you go for a drink and happen to bump into your mom or dad, ask them how they're doing/how work was etc.. A few minutes of conversation will go a long way.

I hate my father, but I spend a significant time with my mother.

You never know you much you'll miss your family until they're gone. I'm 17 turning 18 Feb 2, and honestly, would love to move out, but, I'm not gonna tell my parents how much I want to move out. They have been there for me for 17 years and still support me.
