Hey everybody. So there's this girl that I think is really cute and I've been talking to her. I'd like to start flirting more and make my feelings more obvious, but there's one problem. She has the same last name as I do. I'm not related to her, but I'm not sure if that's wierd or not. What's your opinion on this?

Also, my name isn't a name like Smith or Johnson that are really common. However, it's pretty common as there are a few others with the name too. Thanks guys and gals.

I don't see any issue with that whatsoever. If anything, I'm quite confused as to why this has even been a factor in pursuing this girl.

It just crossed my mind, and I was worried that she would think it's wierd. It's mostly due to the fact that we could be related 50 generations back.

Relation is something that gets diluted. Yes, it's weird if you were cousins. If you were related 50 generations ago, then that makes literally no difference whatsoever.

Go through your family tree. If she's not related to you, then go after her. People who don't know that you're not related will think you are. That will make for an awkward situation when they find out you're dating.

If you ever get married, you won't have to do much about changing her last name :L

Math indicates everybody on Earth is at least 50th cousins.
If you're dating somebody from the same country (not America, where everybody originally came from), then there's a 1/5 chance that you're within 10th cousins.

Personally, I don't see this as a problem. There are a lot bigger hurdles in a relationship than a title you were born with. People might joke once or twice about being married or incest, but that shouldn't turn you away from someone you like. Most people will simply find it an interesting fact about you, like having 5 dogs or having your request played on the radio.

Think about the people with Lee, Smith, Brown last names.
