Well, I'm looking into either buying a desktop, or persuading my parents to buy me one as a graduation gift. I have two main questions that I need to know before going into that.
  • What should I look for in a computer besides hard drive & ram?
  • What is a good site that won't be overpriced on a computer, and can ship to a home/business?

I was going to use bestbuy because they come with warranties, but everyone I've spoken to has told me to avoid them because they boost the prices quite a bit.

;;EDIT - I'd rather not build one right now so a desktop as is would be the best decision for me right now. Budget is about $650-700.

Possible set-up:
Your 1 Case:
NZXT Source 210 Blue with Window USB 3.0 Chassis

Your 1 Motherboard & Processor

AMD FX-4130 Processor

Your 1 Memory
8GB G.Skill Ripjaws

Your 1 Hard Drive
500GB 7200RPM Hard Disk Drive

Your 1 Graphics Card
AMD Radeon HD 6450 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 Video...

Your 1 Optical Drive
DVD / Blu-ray Disc Combo Drive

Your 1 Operating System
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-Bit Edition

Best Buy will literally fuck you in the ass.
The cheapest way to get a good desktop is to build one yourself honestly.
Look into having a good motherboard, and graphics card as well. And a good fan if you're gonna be doing high performance stuff.

Well, see, I'd rather just buy one as is, and once I'm more acquainted with computers and how they're built, I'll start building onto it.

desktop = build it yourself

depends on what you want to do with it and what budget you have?
you want to play hardcore games at max settings?

look into have a adaptable motherboard thats durable, with 4th gen intel support, get a i5 or i7 of the 4th gen, and also get nvidia or a radeon card
^this is how i like my pcs, never went for that amd thingzzzz

doe more info would be need

also motherboard should have a 32-16gb ram max, but only put in 8gb since 8gb is more then enough but next pair of years, 16 will be the new 8

you could buy the parts and pay 50$ to someone to build it, you should still come up winning
if i has close to you i would do it for fr33

Well, honestly, gaming isn't a big priority of mine. I just want a computer that's going to run fast and a computer that will be dependable for a few years. Also, no win 8, win 7 is a must.

srsly consider the option of playing someone to build it
lots of shops will do it, and the most valuable parts come with a warrenty, so no worries

with 700$ you get a good pc if you buy it
with 700$ you get awesome pc if you build it/someone does

Alright. Well, hopefully I can find someone that will build me a computer for a decent price. I know someone, but I don't know if he'll charge me out of the ass just to build one. That's why I was curious of sites to buy desktops as they are, and I can customize them as I get the time/money to learn how to do it myself.

I have a laptop.

I would like to have a laptop & a desktop. I've always preferred desktops over laptops, but laptops are great too.

All you need to look for is a good processor. A Intel i7 is the common good one that most laptops/ desktops will use. This is the part that works everything out essentially.

The graphics card wont matter unless you do want to game.

RAM you're looking for 6GB+ as a minimum imo.

Memory I'd say 1TB is ideal as a starting point.

On the topic of laptop or desktop.
Desktop = more for your money
Laptop = Protalble.

That's your only argument.

Where to buy one? Go to the manufacturers site. They have a clearance section (cant recall the name). In that section are all the laptops and pcs that have been sent back to them for stupid reason (Wrong colour, not the one they wanted) For legal reason they cant sell them as brand new and offer good discounts on them as a result. Have a look on there and see what there is:
(Refurbished was the term//name):
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/laptop...-criteria.html

This is a UK store idk if thats any good to you, but it gives you an idea.
