Reliable? Yes. Better than any other antivirus not made by Microsoft? No. Any software that isn't made by Microsoft that is purely made for that software (anti viruses, word documents, etc) is better than Windows. Windows have a few bugs here and there, whether it's their Operating Systems, word documents, antivirus, etc. If you're looking for a great antivirus, I suggest you use BitDefender, ESET Nod32 as well as Avast. Avast is better than 99% of the anti viruses out there in my opinion but that 1% is BitDefender. BitDefender can sometimes locate backdoor viruses, FUVs (Fully Undetected Viruses), etc when other anti viruses cannot.

BitDefender is number one. Although Avast isn't there, I still use it just because it's reliable. AVG, Norton, McAfee, etc are terrible. Please don't ever use them.

Agreed with everything josh has said, Avast rapes, and norton blows. And its funny cause Avast is free. Norton is way too heavy and doesn't detect as much viruses as other anti-viruses do.
