You use the order of operations, I think you're talking about BEDMAS,
B - Brackets [First]
E - Exponents [Next]
D - Division [Next]
M - Multiplication [Next]
A - Addition [Next]
S - Subtraction [Next]
Although Multiplication can go before division and subtraction can go before addition and vice versa.
